Eleventh five year plan (2007-2012) stressed on higher education enrolment of students between 18 to 23 age group by the end of 2011 and 2012. IT education institutions, formal and non-formal education, were given priority during the eleventh five year planning. Skills development and education were also given priority during the eleventh five year plan for building inclusive growth in the nation. Eleventh five year plan pledged to provide safe drinking water to all by the end of 2012. Gender equality and environmental sustainability were given priority during the tenure of 2007 to 2012. Special emphasis was given on the social sector during the eleventh five year planning timeframe. The Target GDP growth rate during the eleventh five year plan was 9% but the achievable growth rate during the eleventh plan became 8%. During the eleventh five year planning fertility rate reduced in India and it reduced to 2.1 during the time frame.

It is necessary to go through economic planning and a five year plan chapter from a competitive examination point of view and it carries significant weightage in various examinations conducted by central and state governments.
