Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants

Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants

Sexual reproduction in flowering plants, its processes, events, and importance has been discussed in this study. Some FAQs related to this topic have been discussed.

An overview of sexual reproduction in the flowering plants will be given in this study. A definition of sexual reproduction will be provided. Then the overview of sexual reproduction in flowering plants will be given in this study. The process of the sexual reproduction of the flowering plants will be discussed in this study. Furthermore, the importance of sexual reproduction in flowering plants will also be analysed in this study. The events that happen in the sexual reproduction in the flowering plants will also be focused on in this study. Some frequently asked questions related to the topic will be given in this study.

What is Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plant?

The sexual reproduction refers to the production of a new type of organism that is done by combining the genetic pieces of information of two different kinds of sexes. In most of the higher sexes, it is seen that the higher sex produces a small amount of “motile gamete” which goes in the fuse where a large amount of “stationary” gamete is generated by the other sex.

The sexual reproduction in the flowers refers to the process of sexual reproduction in the plants of flowers. There are various steps that are followed in the sexual reproduction of flowers. On the other hand, it has significant importance for the plantation of flowers by this method. However, all the flowering plants are not suitable for it.

Only the angiosperms are suitable for the process of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. On the other hand, the non-flowering plants are not suitable for the sexual reproduction. The process of responding in flowering plants is known as pollination.

Importance of sexual reproduction in flowers

Formation of the seed is very important in the plants for the birth of new flowering plants. Hence, sexual reproduction is very important for the birth of new flowers. Animals such as insects are also very important in the sexual reproduction of flowering plants as they are the main pollinators in the process of sexual reproduction in flowering plants.

On the other hand, the sexual reproduction n the flowering plants are also important as it helps in the “variation to the progeny”. Thus, it helps in the survival of the flowers and plants which maintain their existence in the earth with the other different kinds of species.

Process of sexual reproduction in flowers

The process of reproduction in flowering plants is known as pollination. Inside the flowers, there are male “sex organs”, known as stamen, and female sex organs, known as pistils. In the stamen, there is a part named as another which has pollen. This pollen is moved in the stigma which resides inside the pistil.

There are two ways of pollination in the flower plants which are cross-pollinate and self-pollinate. In many flower plants, the pollen automatically fertilizes the ovules. This process is self-pollinating. On the other hand, in smoke flowers, the animals or the wind helps in moving the pollen of a flowering plant to a different flower plant. In this way, the ovules are fertilized. This process is known as cross-pollination.

The animals who help in moving the pollen are known as the pollinators. There are many insects, for example, butterflies, bees, beetles, who are the pollinators. On the other hand, some birds also help in the process of sexual reproduction in the flowers.

Events of sexual reproduction in flowers

  • There are mainly four events in the sexual reproduction in the flowering plants. These events are Pollination, Fertilization, Embryo formation, and Seedling. In the pollination event, the pollen is transferred into the stigma.
  • In the fertilization event, the fusion of the male gamete with the female eggs cells happens which produces a zygote. In embryo formation, the formed zygote then gets divided into many parts with the help of mitosis. It then produces the embryo.
  • And in the seedling event, the embryos are then separated and they turn into plumule, or cotyledons, or radicals. The mitosis also breaks the Endosperm and creates tissues of the Endosperm that is known as the “food store”.
